So You're Going to be a Mom

April 2012. Our little one 4 ½ weeks!

It’s hard to believe that the tiny little circle on the sonogram is going to grow into a little being whose kicks have you convinced they are going to be the next David Beckham. So what do you do first? Tell everybody, start buying baby clothes, buy all the baby books you can, and stalk up on diapers? Well if you’re anything like me, you wouldn't be able to think straight for at least a month being in a state of awe. It’s sad that my husband ended up reading and highlighting all the baby books before I did.

I’m a new mom to be, currently in my 36th week (I swear I can see the finish line!), and have had tons of learning experiences so far from doctors, my midwife, and other moms who have shared their stories.

But I have much more to learn!

I wasn't expecting to be a mom for a while, but when it happens I guess you just roll with it. Now I couldn't be happier or more excited to meet my little one.

So where to start with Pregnancy? Well if you don’t have a doctor or midwife I suggest you schedule some meet and greets and find someone you are truly comfortable with! I mean for goodness sake you are relying on this person to keep you and your baby safe, it would be easier for you if you could easily connect with that person.

With my experience, I had an OBGYN that I went to since high school for my yearly check-ups, I trusted her completely and knew she would be a great doctor to deliver with.

Before my husband and I found out we were expecting, we were planning to move to Florida, away from all our family (smart move right?) so that meant I had to find a new doctor, and someone I could learn to trust within 6 months. My previous doctor, although she was very sad to see us go, gave me some practice names and doctors I could meet with near the area I would be living, and I did some research myself.

I found one midwife I really liked, but the only thing I was not familiar with about her practice was an at home/ facility midwife. Meaning no hospital involved if it was a low risk birth. The idea of that intrigued me, and so I scheduled a meet and greet with the midwife before I saw any of the doctors my previous doctor said I should meet with.

It turns out I really liked the midwife that I found. She was so down to earth and I felt like I could talk to her about anything the moment I met her.

Before I chose the doctor I would decide to deliver with, I sat down and did some research on home births vs. hospital births. I was completely shocked by the statistics, mainly based on my own stereotyping and what I had seen in the media. Before I met my new midwife, the only births I ever heard of were hospital births, which I thought I would have for my own. So now I’m proud to say, my baby will be born at the midwife facility, all natural with no drugs or hospital staff. I would have really liked to try an at home birth, but that is a little unrealistic seeing as I live in an apartment complex and I wouldn’t want to freak out the neighbors.

So throughout this blog I’m going to talk about how my pregnancy has gone so far through the ups and downs, why I have made the decisions I have, and help other moms with advice on different options they can do for their pregnancies!

Welcome to our crazy but amazing journey! I hope you stick around because I have so much more to learn and share, and I would love to hear positive advice along the way! =]
